| The vines of the estate were planted on about 5 hectares, on the hills underneath the village Casale Marittimo, at about 200 mt above sea level. The terroir where the vines are located is composed with sedimentary clays of the Pliocene; it is calcareous, poor in nitrogen and organical substance but rich in potassium, magnesium and assimilable calcium. |
|
 |
The vines have a Southern-East, Southern and Southern-West exposure with variable slopes.
The vineyards were planted a part in 1997 and a part in 1998. The Merlot vineyards are cultivated in the Nocera area of about 1,5 hectares; Cabernet Sauvignon in Casalvecchio of about 1,5 hectares and Sangiovese is located in a vineyard renamed Principe Guerriero on a surface of about 2,2 hectares. |
The number of vinestocks per hectare is 5,600 for Merlot and Cabernet and about 6,500 for Sangiovese. The most prelevant grafts are Paulsen 1103 and SO4. The vines are trained on Guyot and the yield of grapes per hectare averages from 50 to 60 quintals. The vineyards are treated with great care and attention. |
The limited surface of the estate allows us to follow the vineyard conscientiously, with intensive manwork in all its phases, from the budding up to the harvest, from the Spring pruning to the vine shoots and bunches thinning, where more manwork applied, the more these cultural practices are effective. Manuring is very low and limited to organical substances and theres no use of chemical herbicides.
